After a lot of procrastination, we officially started our ABCs of Summer series on the first day of summer with letter A activities! I kept readjusting our date due to oher life events and finally found the date that felt perfect. We started our ABCs of Summer on June 21st, the first day of summer. This even flowed perfectly with our activities for the day and makes things line up with the beginning of August before school starts.

The Letter A Activities
All About Summer
A was one of the hardest letters for me to think of words. I’m not sure if it’s because it was the first word of the series or if it’s because there were so few strong words for the letter A. As a result, I decided to take it easy on our first day. We talked about the first day of summer and celebrated the new season. Next year, I’d like to do something a little bigger for the summer kick-off but after a busy weekend, we needed a slow start.
Alphabet
In addition to celebrating the first day of summer, we also talked about the alphabet and how we’d be using it this summer. We read the book Chicka Chicka Boom Boom and then we colored a coconut tree from Super Coloring. We talked about how the coconut tree looked in the book and tried to replicate it. There was some disagreement on the color of the coconuts. When the boys finished their pictures, I helped them write their names on their paper. This activity was great for making connections to the text, improving our coloring skills, and writing our names.
Our next activity was a connection to our text as well. For this one, I printed off a letter page from Super Coloring. We didn’t color this page but you definitely could choose to color it. I found this page second or we probably would have used this one for our coloring activity. We took letter erasers and matched them to the letters on the page. As we matched our letters, we also named them and talked about the sound they make. Any small letter manipulative would work for this activity.
The ABCs of Summer
Join us all summer long for more alphabet activities. Some of the activities will use items from around the house while others will be free printable games for you to enjoy with your little one. They will all be play-based and focused on learning at home.
